George J. Sellers, son of Henry and Chloie Elwell Sellers, was born July 1, 1908 at Table Grove, Illinois and departed this life evening of Monday, May 23, 1988 at the Van Buren County Memorial Hospital, Keosauqua at the age of 79.
As a child he moved with is parent to the Mount Zion community southwest of Libertyville and later to Douds where he spent most of his life. He graduated from Douds High School, had been sales manager of Dous Quarries, Inc., and was a crane operator for the Iowa Department of Transportation.
George was member of the Eldon Christian Church, has been a longtime Sunday School teacher in Christ United Methodist Church, Douds, was a Past Master of Celestial Lodge No. 413, Ancient Free and Accepted Masons, Douds, has been presiding officer of all York Rite Masonic bodies and was a member of the Knight of York Cross of Honor. He was a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason, a Shriner, and a member of Twin City Chapter No. 258, Order of Eastern Star at Douds.
He married Velma I Wilson June 24, 1933 in Ottumwa. Velma died April 27, 1986. A brother, Roland and a sister, Mildred Pearson also preceded him in death.
Remaining to cherish his memory are a son, George Merlin Sellers, Knoxville, a daughter, Barbara Hermanson and her husband, Walter L., Story City, three grandchildren, Walter E., Dawn M., and Terri L. Hermanson, a brother, H. LeRoy Sellers, Ottumwa, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held Thursday, May 27, 1988 at 1 p.m. at Pedrick Funeral Home, Douds, with Rev. Stephen Conte officiating. Masonic services were held Wednesday, May 26 at 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Interment was in Zion Lutheran Cemetery, Dous. Memorials were established for Christ United Methodist Church and the Shriners Hospital.
