Irene Koonts, daughter of J. Philip and Susie Swiers Brown, was born Feb. 26, 1896 near Lebanon and died early the morning of Friday, May 6, 1988 at Van Buren County Memorial Hospital, Keosauqua, at the age of 92.
She married Rex Koonts Oct. 28, 1914. Except for a brief period in their early married life when they lived in Ringgold County, they spent their active life farming near Lebanon and retired to Cantril. Mr. Koonts passed away Jan. 12, 1970. She later lived in apartments in Pulaski and Keosauqua and was currently a resident of Van Buren Good Samaritan Center, Keosauqua.
Mrs. Koonts was a long time member of the Lebanon United Methodist Church. Remaining to cherish her memory are a son Retson and his wife, Valera of Milton, two daughters, LaVon Hannam and her husband, Eugene of Keosauqua and Berniel Beal and her husband, Everett of Conover, Ohio, eleven grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren, eight great-great grandchildrn(err), and five step grandchildren. Also surviving are a sister, Mrs. Sam (Willa) Taylor, Toledo, Iowa and a brother, Swiers Brown of Mt. Pleasant, nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by three grandchildren, a step grandson, four brothers, Dennis, Chester, Paul and Foster Brown and by four sisters, Dorothy Roberts, Helen Davis, Eleta Carpenter and Dora Denny.
Funeral services were held Monday, May 9, 1988 at 11 a.m. in the Lebanon United Methodist Church, Rev. Everett Beal and Rev. Stephen Conte officiating. Interment was in Lebanon Cemetery. Arrangements were in charge of Pedrick Funeral Home, Keosauqua. Memorials were established for the Lebanon United Methodist Church and the Van Buren Good Samaritan Center.
