Hugh R. Hollander dies at 79

Hugh R. Hollander, 79, died at 4:45 a.m. today at the long term care unit of Jefferson County Hospital, where he had lived since January 1983.

Funeral services and Elks rites will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Raymond Funeral Home with the Rev. Clair Odell officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery. Visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials have been established to the Fairfield Public Library Endowment Fund and the Elks Project Fund.

Hollander was born June 3, 1907 in Jefferson County, the son of Elmer and Anna Jacobson Hollander. He graduated from Birmingham High School, attended Parsons College and a business college at Fort Madison. A lifetime resident of Jefferson and Van Buren counties, he taught at Cotter and for 33 years was employed at Louden's. On Nov. 26, 1930, he married Esther Fickel at Hamilton, Ill. She died July 20, 1979.

Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Judy and Charlie White of Fairfield; three sisters, Eva Hollander and Myrtle Emry, both of Fairfield, and Bernice Foster of Gaithersburg, Md. His parents and four sisters preceded him in death.

Hollander was a member of First United Methodist Church, Lions Club and Elks Club. He served as secretary of the Elks Club. He served as secretary of the Elks Lodge for a number of years, was a PER and a state officer of the Elks, and had been named Elk of the Year.
