Verne Thomas

Verne Ross Thomas, 85, of Delta, Colo., died at 8:10 p.m. Saturday, June 20, at the Delta Care Center, Delta.

Born Oct. 9, 1901, in Van Buren County, he was the son of Jesse and Della Godown Thomas. He married Harriet Pangborn Nov. 26, 1921, in Keokuk. she died Feb. 19, 1979. He married Mildred Goswick Pangborn Aug. 26, 1982, in Delta.

He was a longtime resident of Cairo, Iowa.

Surviving are his wife; one son, Lester Glenn Thomas, Hanna City, Ill.; four daughters, Verna Baird, Burlington, Hazel Storm, Ely, Janet Aldrich, Cedar Rapids, and Judith Bunney, Cedar Rapids; one stepdaughter, Iris Moore, Clifton, Colo.; one brother, Paul Thomas, Mount Pleasant; five sisters, Mae Rickey, Reno, Nev., Mable Olds, Davenport, Blanche Howsare, Mount Pleasant, Mildred Lake, Fairfield, Cleo Lihs, Wapello; 24 grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; and several great-grandchildren. A son, Lyle Thomas, preceded him in death.

The body was cremated. A memorial service will be held in Delta Friday and a second service at the First Presbyterian Church, Burlington, Friday, July 3, at 11 a.m. Burial will be in Fulton Cemetery, Cairo.
