Leo Robert Pierce

Services were held Friday, August 29, 1986 at the Bonaparte United Church in Bonaparte for Leo Robert Pierce, 70, of Bonaparte, who died August 27, 1986 of lung cancer at the Veterans Hospital in Iowa City.

He was born in Smoke Town, Iowa on February 23, 1916 the youngest in a family of 12, to Walter and Inice (Entwistle) Pierce.

He grew up in the Donon, Randalia, and West Union areas and graduated from the eighth grade at West Union.

On August 24, 1937 he was united in marriage to Kathleen (Torson) at Manchester, Iowa. To this union were born two daughters, Barbara Jean and Karen Mabel. They raised their daughters in the West Union, Alpha, Waterloo, Fredericksburg, Strawberry Point and Dundee areas. They were divorced in 1958.

About 20 years ago he moved to the Bonaparte, Iow(a) area and worked in the rendering plant. In his lifetime he was a truck driver, worked at Rath and John Deere and farmed. In later years he was a caretaker of several cemeteries in the area. He loved the out-of-doors, hunting, fishing, his family and grandchildren.

He was a veteran of World War II and served as a PFC in the infantry and heavy artillery stationed in England, France and Germany. He was a member of the American Legion.

He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers and three sisters.

He is survived by his daughters, Mrs. Edwin (Barbara) Gerdes of Strawberry Point and Mrs. Keith (Karen) Brimmer of Center Point; two grandson, four granddaughters; a brother, Babe Pierce of Fayette, Iowa; two sisters, Mrs. Martha Homewood of West Union and Mrs. Vera Sawvell of Tucson, Arizona.
