Earl Smutz funeral today

MOUNT PLEASANT - Earl R. Smutz, 72, Mount Pleasant, died Friday at Burlington Medical Center.

Funeral services were held today at Beaty-Wilkins Funeral Home at Mount Pleasant with the Revs. Gene Carriker and Ed Newman officiating. Burial was in the Hillsboro Cemetery. A memorial has been established to the American Cancer Society.

Smutz, was born Oct. 5, 1914, at Hillsboro, the son of Craig R. and Hazel Smutz. He married Margaret Osman March 5, 1944, at Dayton, Ohio. Smutz was employed by CB and Q Railroad and Burlington Northern railroad for more than 36 years. He was the last depot agent at Stockport.

He served as 24th Fighter Squadron radio operator for the Army-Air Force during World War II. He was associated with the Midwest Central Radio of Midwest Old Threshers and a member of Hillsboro Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife; his mother, Salem; and a brother, Ralph, Mount Pleasant.
