Robert W. Dorothy

Lt. Col. Robert W. Dorothy, 65-year-old retired Air Force officer, died May 29 at Ft. Collins, Colo. His home was in Carson City, Nev.

Lt. Col Dorothy was born at Birmingham to Robert R. and Mabel Burch Dorothy on Feb. 9, 1921. He married Roberta Nelson Sept. 29, 1942; she died earlier.

He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps and retired from the U.S. Air Force in 1967.

Lt. Col. Dorothy flew 246 combat missions as a fighter pilot in the South Pacific theater of World War II. He was stationed in the New Guinea area. His military decorations included the Distinguished Flying Cross (three time), the Air Force Commendation Medal, and four Pacific Air Combat medals.

Surviving are a daughter, Robin Gard, Bellevue, Colo.; two brothers, Jack Dorothy, Keosauqua, and Bill Dorothy, Mt. Sterling; a grandson and two stepgrandchildren.

The body will be cremated and a memorial service will be held in Carson City at a date to be announce.

A memorial has been established to provide a scholarship for a youth to obtain a private pilot license.
