Merl Wheatley

FAIRFIELD - Merl H. Wheatley, 87, of Fairfield died Jan. 13, 1986, at the Jefferson County Hospital in Fairfield.

She was born May 8, 1896, in Pleasant Plain to Barrett C. and Ida Ginther Johnson. She grew up in the Pleasant Plain community. She married Charles Lewis in 1916. He died Aug. 15, 1942. They farmed in the Douds area before moving to Fairfield in 1946. She married Caleb Wheatley in 1951. He died Jan. 14, 1960. A licensed practical nurse, she worked many years at the Jefferson County Hospital and also as a private care nurse in her later years. She was a member of the Rebekah Lodge 96 and had been a member of the Order of Eastern Star and White Shrine.

She is survived by a son, Roy Lewis of Packwood; three daughters, Lucile Hining of Fairfield and Mary Kawano and Beulah Lewis, both of Chicago; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; three sisters, Mamie Simmons of Clearwater, Fla., Mabel Schafer of Eldon and Velma Horne of Fairfield; and a brother, Gilbert Johnson of Waukee.

The service will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Raymond Funeral Home, the Rev. Kermit Black officiating. Burial will be Evergreen Cemetery.

Family visitation is 7-8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

A memorial has been established to the Peoples Church of Batavia or the Jefferson County Hospital Auxiliary Lifeline.
