Wylie A. Shotten, son of George and Jennie Hosick Shotten, was born September 26, 1891 at Cantril and died Sunday evening, February 16, 1986 at Davis County Hospital, Bloomfield, at the age of 94.

He was a retired farmer and lived his life in the Cantril community. On August 4, 1923 he married Opal Clouse, who died October 3, 1974. A daughter, Margaret Lunsford, and brothers and sisters also preceded him in death.

Survivors are four sons, Murl, George and Raymond all of Cantril and Raymond of Ottumwa, two daughters, Mary Lou Meade, Postville and Madaline Nutt, Atkinson, Illinois, several grandchildren and great-grandchildren, a sister, Media Olson of Granger, Missouri.

Mr. Shotten was wounded in action in the Battle of the Argonne Forest in the service of his country in France during World War I, for which he was awarded the Purple Heart medal. He was a 60-year member of the American Legion, Russell-Strait Post of Milton. He had served on the Cantril City Council and beer active in other community activities.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, February 19, 1986 at 10:30 a.m. at Pedrick Funeral Home, Keosauqua, with Rev. Charles Butler officiating. Interment with military rites by Russell-Strait Post was in Maple Grove Cemetery, Cantril. A memorial was established for Russell-Strait Post.
