Abernethy Richard Burl (Richard Burl Abernethy)

Richard Burl Abernethy, 58 of Milton, passed away at 2:35 p.m. May 24, 1984 at Van Buren County Memorial Hospital, Keosauqua. Richard was born Dec. 4, 1926 in Scotland County, Mo. the son of Otto and Thelma Webber Abernethy.

On Dec. 19, 1948 he was united in marriage to Mary Louise Phillips at the Prairie View Church, and to this union two children were born.

He is survived by his wife Mary Louise of Milton, one daughter, Rita Kay and husband Ricky Shaffer of Muscatine, one son Richard and wife Patricia of Cedar Rapids, one brother Billy Joe of St. Joseph, Mo., and one sister, June Helsel of Cantril.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and one sister.

For the last 18 years, he served with the Horace Mann Insurance Company and was inducted to the Insurance Hall of Fame. He was a member of the Methodist Church at Milton, served in the U.S. Navy in W.W. II, a member of Milton Lions Club, Milton City Council member, Masonic Lodge, Cantril, received CLU Designation, and would have completed Ch.FC in June.

Services were held Sunday, May 26, 1985 at the Methodist church in Milton at 1:30 p.m. with Rev. Charles Butler officiating.

Arrangements were handled by Payne-Gerth Funeral HOme of Memphis, Mo.
