Clara J. Lancaster

Clara Joy Lancaster, daughter of Rev. Milton and Clara A. Holt Campbell, was born July 30, 1906 in Sidney, Iowa and died Thursday, Nov. 14, 1985 at Van Buren County Memorial Hospital in Keosauqua at the age of 79.

Her father was a Methodist minister and the family lived in a number of Iowa towns during her childhood and youth. While living in Mt. Sterling she met Earl R. Lancaster and they were married Feb. 14, 1924 in Yarmouth. Mr. Lancaster was a lumber yard manager and she was his secretary. They managed yards in various locations including Yarmouth, Earlham, Mt. Pleasant, and Maquoketa. In retirement they lived in Florida and Arkansas before moving to Keosauqua.

In each community where they lived they were active in the United Methodist Church and other community organizations. Mrs. Lancaster was a member of the Keosauqua United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, had taught Sunday School and was a volunteer worker in the Mt. Pleasant Hospital for a number of years, as well as nursing homes and the Mental Health Institute.

She was a Past Matron of Earlham Chapter No. 57, Order of Eastern Star and a Past Grand Representative from Iowa to the Grand Chapter of Louisiana. She was a charter member and past president of the Mt. Pleasant Business and Professional Women.

Surviving are her husband, Earl, of Keosauqua, a nephew, Charles Campbell of Ft. Madison, three grandnieces, and other relatives, including Earl's family whom she considered as her own. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Charles Campbell.

Funeral services were held Sunday, Nov. 17, 1985 at 2 p.m. in the Keosauqua United Methodist Church, with Rev. Don Morrison officiating. Interment was in Forest Home Cemetery, Mt. Pleasant. A memorial was established for her church and gifts may be left at Pedrick Home in Keosauqua.
