Woman found dead in area cemetery

An Eldon woman was found shot to death in the Iowaville Cemetery Sunday and the Van Buren County Sheriff's Department and the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation are looking into the matter.

The body of 26-year-old Janet Sue Loomis was discovered in the northeast corner of the cemetery by the sheriff's department in response to a 1:39 p.m. call.

Loomis was pronounced dead by Dr. James T. Worrell, Van Buren County medical examiner.

The body was taken to Des Moines and an autopsy performed Monday morning found a single gunshot wound to the head was the cause of death.

Dr. Wm. Rohr, the forensic pathologist who conducted the autopsy, said Tuesday suicide was "a possibility," but decline to speculate further.

He said the autopsy report would be released in a few days pending the results of a toxicology report on alcohol and other chemical levels in the body.

Loomis worked part-time at an Ottumwa nursing home. She was married to 33-year-old Prinis Michael Loomis of Eldon.

Funeral services were held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the Campbell Funeral Home. She was interred in Iowaville Cemetery where her grandparents and aunt are also reportedly buried.
