William Hofstetter

William D. Hofstetter Sr., 65, of 212 N. Iowa Ave. died at 12:40 a.m. July 10, 1985, at his home.

He was born June 13, 1920, in Ottumwa to William and Leona Carson Hofstetter. A Marine veteran of World War II, he participated in the Battle of Midway and received the Purple Heart after being injured on the Island of Saipan. A retired employee of John Morrell and Company, he was a member of the Ottumwa Baptist Temple and had been active in the Boy Scout Program in Eldon. He married Irene Jones on Oct. 31, 1953, in Lancaster, Mo. She die 1980. He married Helen Guest on Jan. 16, 1982, in Ottumwa.

He is survived by his wife; a son, William D. Jr. of Cantril; a daughter, Sharon Kay Hemm of Eldon; two stepdaughters, Sharon Shaw of Ottumwa and Alice Jones of Golden, Colo.; two grandchildren, six step-grandchildren; and six stepgreat-grandchildren; and four sisters, Irene Nugent of Cedar Rapids, Loretta Smith of Ottumwa, Willa Scott of Des Moines and Marjorie Pyle of Wichita, Kan. He was preceded in death by an infant son, Donald.

The service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Ottumwa Baptist Temple, the Rev. A.D. Pringle officiating. Burial will be in Shaul Cemetery.

The casket will remain at the Johnson Funeral Chapel until 9 a.m. Saturday, when it will be taken to the church.

Visitation will be after 5 p.m. today.

Memorials may be made to his church.
