Lela Courtney

Mrs. Lela Courtney, 86, of Keokuk, died at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 17, 1985 at the Keokuk Convalescent Center following a month-long illness.

She was born May 23, 1898 in Farmington, the daughter of Harry and Stella Folker Van Auken. She married Calvin C. Courtney on March 21, 1917 in Kahoka, Mo. He died Oct. 17, 1960.

She had worked as a telephone operator, was a member of the Farmington Baptist Church, and had lived in Keokuk since 1946.

She is survived by grandsons Ronald and Roger of Keokuk, great-grandchildren, David, Matthew and Amy of Keokuk, and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a son, Dr. Stanley Courtney, who died July 6, 1959; and by a sister, Mrs. Eugene (Virgil) Kelley.

Graveside services were held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 20, in the Oakland Cemetery, Keokuk.

Visitation was at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 19 at the DeJong Funeral Home, Keokuk, and the family met with friends from 7:30 to 8 p.m. A memorial has been established for the American Heart Association.
