Maxine E. Leighton

Maxine E. Leighton, daughter of William and Bessie Holton Gates, was born March 24, 1924 at Ottumwa, Iowa and died Monday evening, Feb. 18, 1985 at the age of 60.

On July 1, 1942, she was united in marriage to Allen P. Leighton at Lancaster, Mo. They farmed in Wapello and Van Buren County, retiring in 1979. They moved to Milton, Iowa and later to County Lane Apartments in 1981.

Remaining are her husband, Allen; three brothers, Harvey and Phillip Gates of Ottumwa, Iowa and Frank Gates, Sini Valley, Calif.; four sisters, La Von Tennison, Caroline Johnson, and Joyce Gates of Ottumwa, Iowa and Delores Brovage of Troy, Michigan, Pat Palmiter of Kansas City, Kansas who spent many days in the Leighton home, several nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends. She was a member of the Bethel Free Methodist Church at Douds, Iowa.

Funeral services were held Thursday, Feb. 21, 1985 at Pedrick Funeral Home, Keosauqua, Iowa with the Rev. Phil Campbell officiating. Interment was in Zion Lutheran Cemetery east of Douds, Iowa. A memorial was established for the Van Buren County Memorial Hospital, Keosauqua, Iowa.
