George N. Aldrich

George Newton Aldrich, son of Charles and Louisa Robertson Aldrich, was born Dec. 29, 1903 near Waukee, Iowa and died early Friday, Jan. 4, 1985 at St. Joseph Hospital in Ottumwa at the age of 81.

He graduated from Waukee High School and Iowa State University, Ames. On May 25, 1928 George married Elsie Knoll in his parents' home near Waukee. They moved to Keosauqua in 1929. He served briefly as assistant Van Buren County Engineer and held the County Engineer's post from 1930-1949 and again from 1957-1965. He was a founding partner of Keosauqua Motor Co. in 1949 and continued as an officer of the company until his death.'

He was a long-time member of the Keosauqua United Methodist Church and had served on his church's board, the Keosauqua School Board and City Council and was active in the Keosauqua Commercial Club, taking a leading role in the Keosauqua Centennial in 1939, the town's on hundred twenty-fifth anniversary in 1964. On February 14, 1967 George was honored by his community as Citizen of the Year. He was a Past Master of Keosauqua Lodge No. 10, Ancient Free and Accepted Masons.

Remaining are his wife, Elsie, two sons, Donald and his wife Shirley of Keosauqua, Roger and his wife Phyllis of Jacksonville, Florida, a daughter Mary Lou Thompson and her husband James of Alameda, California. Also surviving are five grandchildren, Sue Stecker, Adrienne Thompson, and Bruce, Mike and Lindy Aldrich, a sister, Stella Elson, Mesa, Arizona, other relatives and friends. Two brothers, Roy and Floyd a sister, Grace Felt, preceded him in death.

Funeral services were held Sunday, Jan. 6, 1985 at 2 p.m. at the Keosauqua United Methodist Church, with Rev. Bob Patterson officiating. Interment was in Purdom Cemetery, Keosauqua. Arrangements were in charge of Pedrick Funeral Home, Keosauqua.

KEOSAUQUA - George N. Aldrich, 81, died in St. Joseph Hospital, Ottumwa, at 4:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 4.

Mr. Aldrich was long-time Van Buren County engineer, a former city councilman, and a former member of the school board.

He was named Keosauqua Man of the Year on Feb. 14, 1967.

Born to Charles C. and Louisa Robertson Aldrich near Waukee Dec. 29, 1903, he graduated from Waukee High School and Iowa State College. He married Elsie Knoll near Waukee May 25, 1928.

Mr. Aldrich had been a resident of Keosauqua since 1929. He served as assistant county engineer from 1930 to 1949 and again from 1957 to 1965. He became a founding partner of Keosauqua Motor Co. in 1949 and was an officer of the company at the time of his death.

He was a member of the United Methodist church and the Commercial Club, and was a past master of the Masonic Lodge.

Surviving: His wife; two sons, Roger, Jacksonville, Fla., and Donald, Keosauqua; a daughter, Mary Lou Thompson, Alameda, Calif.; a sister Stella Elson, Mesa, Ariz.; and five grandchildren.

Funeral: 2 p.m. Sunday at the Keosauqua United Methodist Church; Purdom Cemetery. Memorials have been established at Pedrick Funeral Home.
