Youth killed in motorcycle accident

Jerry joe DeWitt, 19, of Iowa Falls, a grandson of Everett DeWitt of Farmington and Lorene Chapman of Bonaparte, was killed in a motorcycle accident at 10:07 p.m. Thursday, August 9.

Also killed in the accident was a passenger on the motorcycle DeWitt was driving, Theresa Butler, 19, of Iowa Falls.

Officers reported that DeWitt was driving the motorcycle on a county gravel road when it crashed into an Illinois Central Gulf Railroad train at 10:07 Thursday.

Several members of a train crew spotted the bodies near railroad tracks at 6:35 a.m. Friday. The accident happened southwest of Iowa Falls.

JERRY JOE DE WITT

Jerry Joe DeWitt, 19, of Iowa Falls, died as the result of a motorcycle accident south of Iowa Falls on August 9, 1984.

He was born July 14, 1965 at Mason City, Iowa, the son of Jerry L. and Janet R. Chapman DeWitt.

A 1983 graduate of Iowa Falls High School, he had been a private first class since September, 1982 with Detachment 1 Company C, 1st Battalion 133rd Infantry, Division of the Iowa Army National Guard at Iowa Falls.

He was a member of the Wesleyan Church of Fayette, Iowa.

Survivors in addition to his parents include: one sister, Mrs. Bruce (Leilani) Anderson of Clarmont, Iowa; great-grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Scott Wilson of Bonaparte and Metha Cox of Marshalltown; grandparents Miriam Reyes of Fort Madison, Iowa, Everett DeWitt of Farmington and Lorene Chapman of Bonaparte and two nieces.

He was preceded in death by both great-grandfathers and his grandfather, Lee Chapman.

Funeral services were held on Monday, August 13, 1984 at 2 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Iowa Falls with Rev. Keith Nash officiating. Burial was in the Friends Cemetery in Iowa Falls.

Surls Funeral Home of Iowa Falls was in charge of arrangements.
