Vergil M. Smith

Vergil M. Smith, daughter of Charles and Elizabeth Hull Roberts, was born Oct. 8, 1892 at Birmingham and died Thursday, Feb. 2, 1984, at Van Buren Good Samaritan Center in Keosauqua at the age of 91.

On Dec. 11, 1912, she married Harold Smith. They operated a drug store in Cantril for a number of years. In the mid 1930's they moved to Newton and later to Des Moines where they continued to operate pharmacies.

Mr. Smith died Dec. 31, 1962. A sister, Blanche Meade, also preceded her in death. Mrs. Smith returned to Cantril in the late 1970's where she resided until entering the Good Samaritan Center in March, 1981.

Remaining are a son, H. Donald Smith and his wife, Louellajane of Cantril, two granddaughters, Sherry Kleveter and her husband David of Omaha, Neb., and Linda Sharp and her husband Jack of Cantril, eight great grandchildren, other relatives and friends.

She was a member of the Cantril United Methodist Church and active in the work of the church so long as her health permitted. She will be remembered as a devoted mother and grandmother, a good citizen and friend.

Funeral services were held Sunday, Feb. 5, 1984 at 1 p.m. at Pedrick Funeral Home, Keosauqua, with Rev. Charles Butler officiating. Interment was in Maple Grove Cemetery at Cantril. A memorial was established for her church.
