JAMES RANKIN

NEW LONDON - Former Keosauqua and Mount Pleasant resident, James Vinton Rankin, 63, of New London died Thursday, Dec. 1, 1983, in Veterans Hospital at Iowa City.

He was born Jan. 1, 1920, at Keosauqua to Paul M. and Helen Gordon Rankin. He married Florence P. Armstrong on Feb. 5, 1948, at Keosauqua. He worked for the Iowa Highway Department for 27 years, retiring in1982. He served in the U.S. Army in World War II, receiving five bronze stars and one air medal in Africa, Italy and France. He attended the First United Methodist Church at Mount Pleasant and was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2561 and a founding member of the Henry County Rescue Squad.

He is survived by his wife; his mother of New London; two sons, Tony L. of Selinsgrove, Pa., and D. Timm of Winter Park, Fla.; two daughters, Rhonda Rowe of Apple Valley, Minn., and Deanne Woodsmall of Carpentersville, Ill.; seven grandchildren; and a sister, Neva M. Rankin of New London.

The service was held at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 5, 1983 at Weir Funeral Home at Mount Pleasant, the Rev. Reg Merrill officiating. Burial was in Center Chapel Cemetery at Keosauqua at 2:30 p.m. with military rites.

Memorials may be made to the Avenue of Flags, Henry County Health Center Dialysis Unit or the Little League, all at Mount Pleasant.
