MAX L. JOHNSON

Max L. Johnson, son of Rex and Cordie Fry Johnson, was born March 15, 1921, at Packwood and departed this life Tuesday, September 13, 1983, at Jefferson County Hospital in Fairfield, at the age of 62.

He graduated from Hillsboro High School and on November 7, 1939 was united in marriage to Naomi Watson at Kahoka, Missouri. They farmed near Stockport and moved to Keosauqua in July, 1980.

Surviving are his wife; his mother of Salem; three sons, Charles of Keosauqua, Stanley of Stockport, and Gary of Ottumwa; two daughters, Patricia Anderson of Seymour, Indiana, and Judith Barnett of Manitou Springs, Colorado; and 11 grandchildren. Also surviving are three brothers, Arnold of Chicago, Illinois, Howard of Hillsboro, and Kenneth of Stockport.

A life-long farmer, Max had served 12 years as a Van Buren County Soil Commissioner, had been a regional soil commissioner as well as a director of the Federal Land Bank in Mt. Pleasant. He was a past president of the Stockport Lions Club, the Van Buren County Farm Bureau, and the Van Buren County Fair Board, and served a number of years on the Van Buren Foundation Board. He was a member of the Riverview Club in Keosauqua.

Funeral services were held Friday, September 16, at 2:30 p.m. in the Stockport United Methodist Church, with Rev. David Kennedy officiating. Interment was in the Hillsboro Cemetery. Memorials to the Stockport First Responders may be left at Pedrick Funeral Home, Keosauqua, or given to the family.
