CLYDE A. DILLE

Clyde A. Dille, 81, who had been an active businessman in Birmingham for over a half century, died at 9:40 p.m. Saturday, August 27, 1983 at the Jefferson County Hospital, where he had been a patient since July 24.

He began his career in the grocery business when he began working in the Farmers Store in January, 1923, at that time Birmingham had five grocery and general stores.

A group of farmers formed a stock company owning a combined grocery and general merchandise store with five directors. He remained with the store and was named manager in 1934. The farmers organization sold the store to Clyde Dille and Van Dustin in 1951. Three years later Dustin sold his interest to Dille. In later years his son, Kenneth Dille, was associated with the business until it was sold in 1978.

Clyde A. Dille was born November 2, 1901 in Salem. He was the son of Edwin and Sarah Hodson Dille. He was reared and educated in Salem and Douds communities and spent his entire adult life in Birmingham.

Clyde was married to Gertrude Topping, April 27, 1926 in Birmingham. She survives.

In addition to his widow, he is survived by two sons, Lloyd, East Hampton, New York, and Kenneth, Birmingham; a daughter, Bette J. Countryman, Birmingham; a brother, Vance Dille, Birmingham; a sister, Ina Hootman, Fairfield; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by a grandson, one brother and one sister.

In addition to operating his business, Dille was active in social and community affairs. He was a member and elder of the Birmingham Presbyterian Church, charter member of the Birmingham Lions Club, a member of IOOF and the Birmingham Fire Department. He also served on the school board and city council.

Services were held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, August 31, at the Birmingham Presbyterian Church with Rev. Charles McCracken officiating. Burial was in Maple Hill Cemetery at Birmingham.

Memorials may be made to the Birmingham Presbyterian Church, Lions Club, or fire department.
