JOHN SELDON BARKER

John S. Barker, son of George Van Emman and Catharine Isabel McIntosh Barker, was born September 12, 1902 near Mt. Zion in Van Buren County, Iowa. He married Iris Augustine on April 14, 1928, at Birmingham and the couple lived in Van Buren and Louisa counties before moving to a farm in the Rock Creek community west of Grinnell in 1948. He was a member of the Victor Grange, the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, Rebekah Lodge #119 of Grinnell and was Noble Grand of Lodge #358.

Surviving are his wife, his children, Mrs. Twyla Wells of Grinnell and Stanley of Boise, Idaho; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; as well as three step great-grandchildren. Also surviving are three sisters and one brother, Mrs. Edith Dodds and Mrs. Martha Danielson, both of Fairfield, Mrs. Josephine Wells of Cantril and Ralph Barker of Keosauqua.

John died Thursday, morning, August 11, 1983, at Penn Community Hospital. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and one sister.

Funeral services were held Monday, August 15 at Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell with Rev. James Russell officiating. Interment was in Hazelwood Cemetery.
