CLARENCE W. STRAIT

Clarence W. Strait, son of Israel and Sarah Plowman Strait was born April 22, 1891, in the Irish Bend neighborhood south of Kilbourn and departed this life Tuesday, April 12, 1983 at Bloomfield Manor in Bloomfield, at the age of 91.

On March 22, 1923, he married Daisy Reneker in Ottumwa. They farmed in Van Buren County. Mrs. Strait died in 1976, and he continued to reside on the farm north of Keosauqua until entering the nursing home in October, 1982.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Roscoe, Garfield and Edward, and two sisters, Blanche Burkett and Marquerite Austin.

Surviving are a son, Wayne of Keosauqua, three granddaughters, Kathleen Strait, Bloomfield, Louise Brown, Murray, and Mary Parish, Agency, and a great-granddaughter, Lindsey Brown. Also surviving are two brothers, Bruce and Wilbur, both of Keosauqua; two sisters, Lena Crane, Keosauqua and Mae DeLong, Washington.

Clarence was a long-time member of the Keosauqua United Methodist church and served as secretary of its Sunday School for more than 20 years. He served in the United States Army in France during World War I, and was a member of Beer-Barker Post No. 113, American Legion at Keosauqua and the World War I Veterans.

Funeral services were held Thursday, April 14, 1983 at 1:30 p.m. in the Keosauqua United Methodist Church, with Rev. Louise Knupp officiating. Interment with military rites in charge of Beer-Barker Post 113, American Legion, was in Zion Lutheran Cemetery near Douds. A memorial was established for the church. Pedrick Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
