Winford H. "Wimpy" Starnes

Winford H. Starnes, son of Charley and Lottie Sanders Starnes, was born April 9, 1920 at Gibson, Mo., and died early the morning of Wednesday, March 23, 1983, at his home in Keosauqua at the age of 62.

He came to Keosauqua as a young man with the Civilian Conservation Corps, and on July 9, 1940 was united in marriage to Lois Scotton in Keosauqua, where they have made their home all their married life.

She remains with their daughter, Barbara Pilcher of Keosauqua, three sons, Winford, Jr., with the U.S. Navy, Jacksonville, Fla., Charley of Keosauqua and Wilson of Fairfield 13 grandchildren and a great granddaughter. Also surviving are two sisters, Esther Harris, Citrus Heights, Calif., and Pauline Taylor, Brookland, Ark., other relatives and friends.

His parents and a brother preceded him in death.

"Wimpy", as he was known to his friends was employed as a machinist at the Dexter Company in Fairfield for many years, retiring due to ill health Oct. 1, 1982.

He was an Army veteran of World War II, a member of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars at Keosauqua and the Eagles Lodge at Keosauqua and the Eagles Lodge at Fairfield. he will be remembered as a devoted husband and father, a good neighbor and friend.

Funeral services were held Saturday, March 26, 1983 at 10:30 a.m. at Pedrick Funeral Home in Keosauqua, with Rev. Bob Patterson officiating. Interment with military rites in charge of Beer-Barker Post No. 113, American Legion, was in Pittsburg Cemetery. A memorial was established for Van Buren County Memorial Hospital.
