Bert Avery Dies At 89

Bert Avery, 89, retired Jefferson County farmer, died at 1:50 p.m. Tuesday at his home eight miles north of Fairfield.

Services will be Thursday at 2:30 p.m. at the Raymond Funeral Home with the Rev. David Kennedy officiating. Interment will be in Antioch Cemetery.

Members of the family will receive friends this evening, Wednesday, at the funeral home from 7 to 8 p.m.

Bert Avery was born Nov. 3, 1887, near Packwood, the son of John and Josephine Lemming Avery. He was reared and educated in Jefferson County.

His marriage to Sadie Coop took place Oct. 13, 1907, in Fairfield. She died May 24, 1976. Avery spent his entire life in Jefferson County.

Survivors include four sons and five daughters. They include Selbert E. Citrus Heights, Calif.; Merle, Fairfield; Gerald, Fairfield; and Homer, Milton; Edna Carroll, Princeville, Ill.; Ferne Dickinson, Packwood; Cecile Morrow, Muscatine; Helene Pool, Douds; and Margurite Orms, Fairfield.

Other survivors include 21 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one daughter, four grandchildren and one great-grandchild, two sisters and six brothers.
