Grace M. McNamar

Grace Gilbertine McNamar, youngest daughter of William Otis and Floretta Jane Thompson, was born Aug. 3, 1895, at Winchester, Iowa, and died Thursday, Jan. 6, 1983, at Carlisle Care Center in Carlisle, Iowa, at the age of 87.

At an early age she moved with her parents to Bonaparte, Iowa. While still in school she became a part-time telephone operator for the Farmers Telephone, Co., where he father was local manager. Later she became a sales-lady for the Doughty Dry Goods Store.

On June 16, 1914, she was united in marriage to Wesley L. McNamar. To this union four sons were born. In July, 1920, she moved with her family to Keosauqua, where they lived for 26 years, her husband, having been appointed Depot Agent for the Rock Island Railroad. In 1946 they moved to Malcom and in 1948 to Monroe, where after a short illness, Mr. McNamar passed away on Nov. 12, 1948.

In the spring of 1949 Mrs. McNamar moved back to Keosauqua and returned to her old profession as a telephone operator until the company converted to dial phones.

Grace joined the Keosauqua United Methodist Church in 1932, where she has been a loyal member. She was a charter member of the Women's Society of Christian Service, now known as United Methodist Women. She was also a member of the Royal Neighbors and Order of Eastern Star. Remaining are two son, Max and wife Jean of North Bend, Oregon and William and wife Caroline of Hartford, Iowa, daughters-in-law Arlene McNamar of Keoauqua and Ihla McNamar of Pella, six grandchildren, three great grandchildren, other relatives and friends.

In addition to her parents and her husband, two sons, Loraine and Noel, a grandson, William Leroy, and three sisters, Lela Von Seggen, Ethel King, and Virgie Allen preceded her in death.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Jan. 8, 1983, in the Keosauqua United Methodist Church, with Rev. Charles Butler officiating. Interment was in Thompson Cemetery southwest of Bonaparte. Arrangements were in charge of Pedrick Funeral Home.
