RUTH MARY GASTON

Ruth Mary Gaston, daughter of Fletcher and Nettie Huston Wells, was born June 23, 1914 in Van Buren County near Lebanon, and departed this life Sunday, August 1, 1982, at Jefferson County Hospital in Fairfield at the age of 68.

She graduated from Keosauqua High School, attended Iowa Wesleyan College at Mt. Pleasant and taught a rural school north of Cantril. On May 10, 1934, she married Keith Gaston of Keosauqua at Cantril. They farmed in the Center Chapel community south of Keosauqua until moving to town in 1966.

Surviving are her husband, Keith; a son, Ned of Keosauqua; a daughter, Ann of Warrensville, Illinois; four grandchildren, Steven and Kerry Gaston and Jeff and Jacqueline Atwood; a brother, Earl Wells of Omaha, Nebraska; other relatives and friends.

A daughter, Susan Kay Atwood, two brothers, Lester and Harold Wells, and a sister, Lila McKinney, preceded her in death.

Ruth was a member of the Center Chapel United Methodist Church, Chapter I, P.E.O., Van Buren County Republican Women, and a 50 year member of Alpha Xi Delta sorority. Since moving to town, she and Keith attended the Keosauqua United Methodist Church. She had been a proof reader for the Van Buren County Register, and served several years as Keosauqua City Clerk.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, August 4, 1982, at 2 p.m. at the Keosauqua United Methodist Church, with Rev. Louise Knupp and Rev. Paul Knupp officiating. Interment was in Center Chapel Cemetery near Keosauqua. A memorial was established.
