Dan Cresap, Former Bonaparte Business Man, Dead At 92

Bonaparte, Ia. - Dan Cresap, 92, last of the old-time Bonaparte businessmen, died Feb. 25 at Evanston, Ill., according to word received here.

Mr. and Mrs. Cresap went to Evanston a few years ago to live at the home of their daughter, Mrs. O. G. Corns. Mrs. Cresap died on Christmas day, two months to the day before her husband’s death.

Cresap was one of Bonaparte’s most active businessmen more than 60 years. He was extensively engaged in the livestock and meat business for more than half a century, and later owned and operated the D. Cresap drug store.

At one time he also owned and operated a large wheat ranch in Canada.

Cresap held several public offices, including that of mayor of Bonapaprte. He is remembered for his activities in helping promote old-time Bonaparte Fourth of July activities, which were famous in southern Iowa and southern Missouri during the “gay nineties.”

Cresap was born a short distance northeast of Bonaparte on a large tract of land belonging to the pioneering Cresap family, who came from the east and helpd establish the town of Bonaparte in 1837. The family owned what is now the east half of town.

Besides his daughter, Cresap is survived by several more distant relaives. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Services and burial were at Evanston.
