EUGENE B. ALEXANDER

Eugene B. Alexander, son of Emery and Gertie Cavitt Alexander, was born September 2, 1908, in Van Buren County and departed this life Tuesday, February 24, 1981, at his home in Keosauqua at the age of 72.

On September 22, 1934, he married Hazel Sheets in Keosauqua. They farmed in Van Buren County until 1963. From 1961-1965 they operated the Goodie Garden Cafe in Keosauqua, and he had driven a Van Buren Community School bus for thirteen years.

Remaining to cherish his memory are his widow, Hazel; two sons, Major E. Leon Alexander, U.S. Army, Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas, and Donald Alexander, Fort Madison; a daughter, Connie Dobert, Fort Madison; and seven grandchildren, Kim, Dan, Russell, Leona and Wythe Alexander, and Alan and Elizabeth Dobert. Also surviving are four brothers, Arthur, Wyaconda, Mo., Wiley, Keosauqua, Neal, Alpha, Ill., and Roy, Jefferson; two sisters, Letha Scott, Keosauqua, and Grace Brewer, Milton; several nieces and nephews, including Wanda Sheets Ryner of Monmouth, Ill. who had lived with Gene and Hazel, other relatives and friends. Two brothers, Leonard and Stanley, and two sisters, Edna Thomas and Clara Mae Phillips preceded him in death.

Gene was a member of the Center Chapel United Methodist Church, and will be remembered as a devoted neighbor and friend.

Funeral services were held Friday, Feb. 27, 1981, at 1:30 p.m. at Center Chapel United Methodist Church, with Rev. Paul Knupp officiating. Honorary pall bearers were Larry Bartholomew, Keith Gaston, Jack Mitchell, Verdon Perkins, and Walter Bentzinger. Active bearers were Earl Arnold, John McIntosh, Marvin Story, Junior Snodgrass, Ned Gaston and Tom Wiley. Interment was in Center Chapel Cemetery. Arrangements were in charge of Pedrick Funeral Home. A memorial was established for Center Chapel Church.
