HAROLD WELLS

Harold Wells, son of F.J. and Nettie Houston Wells, was born July 6, 1899 at Emmetsburg, Iowa, and departed this life Thursday, October 29, 1981 in the Davis County Hospital at Bloomfield, Iowa at the age of 82.

As a boy he moved to the Cantril community. On August 2, 1923, he married Josephine Barker at Mount Pleasant. They farmed north of Cantril.

In addition to farming, Harold was the Van Buren County Treasurer for 23 years, retiring in 1970. He was President of the State Association of County Offices for two years. He was a veteran of World War I.

Harold was a member of the Cantril United Methodist Church, a 50 year member of Apollo Lodge No. 4661, A.F. & A.M. and Cantril Chapter No. 437, OES, a charter member of the Robert Tadlock Post, American Legion, Cantril.

Remaining to cherish his memory are his wife Jean of St. Louis, Mo., Dwight and his wife Mariah of Los Angeles, Calif., Van and his wife Barbara of Chicago, Ill., and Donald and his wife Esther of Milton, 12 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, one sister, Mrs. Keith Gaston of Keosauqua, and a brother, Earl of Omaha, Nebr. other relatives and many friends.

A brother, Lester, a sister, Lila McKinney, a granddaughter, Cynthia Wells, and a great granddaughter, Cory Hirst preceded him in death.

Funeral services were held Saturday, October 31, 1981 at 2 p.m. at the Cantril United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Edward Kail officiating. Mrs. Merle McDonald was organist and Mrs. Harold Jamison vocalist. Pallbearers were Joe Kirkhart, John Creath, Clyde Kerr, John Craig, Wesley Pierce, and Jack Hamburge. Interment was in Maple Grove Cemetery at Cantril. Memorials were established for his Church. Arrangements were in charge of Pedrick Funeral Home, Keosauqua.
