Hillsboro Youth Killed

An 11-year-old Hillsboro boy is dead as the result of an apparent hunting accident Wednesday, Jan. 14.

According to a report from the Henry County Sheriff's office, Kenneth Sanderson, Jr. was shot in the head shortly before noon and died shortly afterward at Henry County Health Center.

Preliminary findings in an investigation made by the Henry County Sheriff's office, the county attorney and the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation indicate that Sanderson was shot by another youth in a hunting accident in a pasture near the Sanderson residence, the sheriff's report stated.

Sanderson was a fourth grader in Harmony Elementary School at Hillsboro. Classes had been cancelled for an in-service day in the Harmony school district.

Kenneth Sanderson Jr. was born May 5, 1969 at Kirksville, Mo. to Kenneth and Naomi Garmoe Sanderson. He was a member of the Hillsboro Baptist church.

Surviving: the parents; four brothers, Lynn, Mt. Pleasant, William, Michael and Mark, all at home; a sister, Mary Grace, at home; grandparents, Mrs. Norene Garmoe, Salem and Mrs. Leona Sanderson, Hillsboro.

The funeral was held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, in the Hillsboro Baptist church. The Rev. Leo Sheffel officiated. Burial was in the Hillsboro cemetery. A memorial has been established at Beatty Funeral Home, Mt. Pleasant.
