M. ELIZABETH HOOTMAN

M. Elizabeth Hootman, daughter of A. Llewellyn and Ida Crawford Biggs, was born on June 18, 1888 in a sod house on the family homestead in Brown County, Nebraska, and departed this life at Ogden Manor, Ogden, Iowa on Monday, November 30, 1981 at the age of 93.

She attended Highland Park College in Des Moines and was a long-time teacher in rural schools in Iowa. She also taught in Minnesota, North Dakota and Michigan, and was a news correspondent for area papers in Van Buren County for over 30 years.

On June 18, 1914 she married H. Hovey Hootman at her family home near Douds. Mr. Hootman was a school administrator, and they farmed in the Mt. Zion and Douds communities. He died in 1948, after which she moved to Birmingham where she resided until moving to Ogden to live with her daughter.

Remaining to cherish her memory are her daughter, Janet Beer and son-in-law Craig Beer of Ogden, five grandchildren, Teresa Larson, Ames, Alice McCoy, Atlanta, Ga., Steve Beer, Colorado Springs, Colo. and James and Bonnie Beer of Ogden; a sister-in-law, Clarice Biggs of Fairfield, a number of nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends, with many of whom she carried on regular correspondence.

She was a member of Birmingham Presbyterian Women, Van Buren County Historical Society and Van Buren County Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, and remained an avid student and participant in current affairs throughout her long and active life.

Funeral services were on Thursday, Dec. 3, 1981 at 11 A.M. at Pedrick Funeral Home in Douds, with Rev. Harold Schnedler officiating. Interment will be in Zion Lutheran Cemetery near Douds. A memorial was established and gifts may be left at the funeral home.
