KATHARINE E. BOYER

Katharine Esther Boyer, daughter of Ellis and Marjorie Alice Carson Smith, was born March 4, 1895, near Selma and departed this life Saturday February 21, 1981, at Van Buren County Memorial Hospital in Keosauqua at the age of 85.

She graduated from Keosauqua High School in 1915, attended Iowa State Teachers College and taught school for four years.

On March 6, 1918, she married George W. Boyer at Ottumwa. They established their home on a farm a mile west of Douds where they spent their married life. Mr. Boyer died in 1927. She had lived in Douds since 1952 during which time she taught the Ellis School south of town, died bookkeeping at Pedricks' Store, and was a postal clerk from 1947 until her retirement in 1960.

Mrs. Boyer was baptized in the Christian Church at Keosauqua and was a regular attender of Christ in Douds. She was a 50 year member of Twin City Chapter No. 258, Order of Eastern Star at Douds, Twin City Chapter No. Twin City Chapter No. 258.

Remaining to cherish her memory are two sons, John W. (Jack) of Douds and his Wife Verna Ruth and Richard S. of American Fork, Utah, and his wife Elaine, 8 grandchildren, Jerry, John, Robert, Richard, and David Boyer, Janet Becker, Susan Sohn, and Kathryn Allen and seventeen great grandchildren. Also surviving are three sisters, Margaret Stinson of Fairfield, Aletha Smith of Des Moines and Etta Hissem of Ottumwa. three brothers, Fred, Justin, and Norvin Smith and three sisters, Eva Smith, Retta Keck, and Myrtle Askew preceded her in death. Katharine will be remembered as a devoted mother and grandmother, a good citizen, neighbor and friends.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, February 24, 1981, at 1:30 p.m. at Christ United Methodist Church in Douds, with Dr. Chris Daniel officiating. Mrs. John Boyer was the soloist, accompanied by her husband. Pallbearers were Jerry, John, Robert, David and Jeff Boyer, Don Becker, Darryl Sohm, John Allen and Richard Boyer, Jr. Interment was in Zion Lutheran Cemetery. A memorial was established for Christ United Methodist Church. Arrangements were in charge of Pedrick Funeral Home, Douds assisted by Ricard Boyer, Jr. F.D.
