BERTHA I. BARKER

Bertha I. Barker, daughter of Robert and Anna Sturgis Dorothy, was born Nov. 21, 1897, in Stockport and departed this life Fri. Sept. 4, 1981 at Van Buren Good Samaritan Center in Keosauqua, at the age of 83. She graduated from Birmingham High School, lived in Keosauqua, and on Feb. 22, 1919 was married to Stanley A. Barker. They operated Barker Mercantile in Douds and she was a teller in the Farmers & Traders Savings Bank for 25 years.

An active community person, she was a member of Christ United Methodist Church and served on the building committee when the present church structure was built; a member of United Methodist Women, a Past Matron and long time Treasurer of Twin City Chapter No. 258, Order of Eastern Star; and a member of John Hyson Reneker Unit No. 494, American Legion Auxiliary. She served a in Republican politics, served on the Douds Precinct Election Board, was an avid sports booster when her children and grand children were in school, and was involved in numerous other civic efforts throughout her long and active life.

Her husband preceded her in death in 1963. 5 brothers, Walt, Alma, El, Robert and Arthur Dorothy also preceded her in death. Remaining to cherish her memory are two daughters, Anna Margaret Morrison and her husband Cree of Rock Island, Dorothy Pollock and her husband Davis of Douds, 5 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, other relatives and friends.

Bert will be remembered as a devoted mother and grandmother, a good citizen, neighbor and friend.

Funeral services were held Monday, Sept. 7 at Christ United Methodist Church in Douds, with Dr. Chris Daniel, pastor, officiating. Mrs. Monte Humble was the orgnist(err). Pallbearers were Jack and James Dorothy, Marvin Roush, Ellis Barker, Berdott Grubbs and Larry Pollock. Interment was in Zion Lutheran Cemetery near Douds. A memorial was established for her church. Arrangements wer(err) in charge of Pedrick Funeral Home, Douds.
