J. Edwin Zeitler

J. Edwin Zeitler, son of James H. and Ella Brooks Zeitler, was born June 26, 1893, near Douds, and died at Van Buren county hospital Dec. 14, 1961, at the age of 68 years, 5 months and 18 days. He spent his lifetime in Chequest township, with the exception of two years in Milton

On June 28, 1911, he married Marie Casady, who survives. Also surviving are three children, Harold of Milton, Mrs. Hollis Wells of Douds, and James of Douds; eight grandchildren, one great-granddaughter, and a number of nieces and nephews.

Other survivors are three sisters, Mrs. Sarah Bowman of Chicago, Ill., Mrs. Clara Law of Troy, and Mrs. Ada Lazenby of Keosauqua; two brothers, George of Minot, N.D. and Asa of Selma. His parents and a brother, Roe, preceded him in death.

Mr. Zeitler was a farmer and carpenter. He was a member of the Baptist church; Knights of Pythias, Starlight Lodge No. 350 at Douds; and the Farm Bureau. For many years he was Chequest township assessor and secretary of the township school board.

Funeral services were Sunday, Dec. 17, at Christ Methodist church, Douds, conducted by the pastor, Lowell Hoyle. Vocalists were Mrs. Keith A. Smith and Mrs. Robert Pedrick, accompanied by Mrs. John Robinson. Pythian rites were conducted by Starlight Lodge No. 350.

Pallbearers were Clarence Clayton, George Saylor, Ellsworth Buckles, Peter Brooks, Varold Davis, Gene Turner, Max Williams, L.H. Besick, George Luke and Melvin Sandy. Interment was in Sunnyside cemetery, Milton.
