JOSEPHINE WELLS

Josephine Wells, 94, of Cantril died at 5:45 a.m., August 27, 1993, at her home.

She was born Decembr 22, 1896, southeast of Mount Zion to George V. and Catharine McIntosh Barker. She married Harold Wells August 2, 1923, in Mount Pleasant. He preceded her in death on October 30, 1981.

She graduated from Keosauqua High School, attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, taught in Van Buren County rural schools and the Keosauqua school system and served two terms as Deputy County Superintendent of Schools.

She was a member of Cantril United Methodist Church and its various organizations, was a 50-year member of Order of Eastern Star, and member of Van Buren County Retired Teachers Association and Van Buren Historical Society.

She is survived by four sons, Harold Wayne of St. Louis, Donald of Milton, Robert Dwight and Van both of Los Angeles; 12 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; a sister, Martha Danielson of Libertyville; and a brother, Ralph Barker of Ottumwa.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Isabel Fair and Edith Dodds; four brothers, Verne, John, Hugh, and Arnold Barker; a granddaughter; and a great-granddaughter.

The service was held at 11 a.m. Monday, August 30, 1993, at Cantril United Methodist Church, the Rev. Kim Eanes officiating. Burial was in Maple Cemetery in Cantril.

Memorials may be made to Cantril United Methodist Church.

Pedrick Funeral Home, Keosauqua, was in charge of arrangements.
