ROBERT MCcomb

Robert Bruce McComb, 97, formerly of Milton died May 10, 1989, at Regional Medical Center in Orangeburg, S.C.

He was born Dec. 18, 1891, near Bonaparte to George Bruce and Lena Belle Rockefellow McComb. He was a graduate of Des Moines University and attended graduate school at the University of Iowa. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1917 to 1919 during World War I. He taught in Van Buren County schools for 25 years and was superintendent at Cantril, Douds-Leando and Milton. He was employed by the U.S. Weather Bureau from 1936 to 1956, with the last 12 years spent at Spokane, Wash. as meteorologist in charge. After his retirement he returned to Iowa as physics and mathematics teacher at Cantril and Pulaski and had a photographic studio in Milton.

He was an accomplished instrumental musician and organized orchestras and bands at several locations. He was a member of the Milton Methodist Church. He married Rilla Bennett Saar on Aug. 19, 1917, in Cantril. She preceded him in death.

He is survived by two sons, Richard of Norfolk, Va. and Robert of Orangeburg, S.C.; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; four step grandchildren; eight step great grandchildren; two sisters, Marie Lingenfelter of Red Bluff, Calif. and Helen White of Bonaparte; and a brother, Harold C. of rural Bonaparte.

Memorial services will be conducted at the Milton Methodist Church at a date to be announced later.
