Paul McBratney

MILTON - Charles Paul McBratney, 74, former Van Buren County Auditor, Milton, died Nov. 28, 1987 at the Ottumwa Regional Health Center.

He was born Dec. 5, 1912 in Milton to Charles and Bertha Henthorn McBratney. After graduating from Milton High School, he worked for the Citizens Bank of Milton for four years and served as Van Buren County Auditor from 1937 to 1945. He operated the McBratney Grocery Store in Milton for 13 years and then was employed by the State Savings Bank of Cantril for 20 years, retiring as head cashier in 1979.

A World War II veteran, he was a member of the Milton United Methodist Church, American Legion Russell Strait Post No. 483 and 50-year member of the Celestrial Masonic Lodge of Douds.

He married Dorothy Gould on May 13, 1939 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. She died Nov. 8, 1987.

Survivors include a daughter, Karen Huffman of Urbana, Ill. and three grandchildren.

The service was held Thursday at the Milton United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Andrew Rubenking. Burial with military rites was held in the Sunnyside Cemetery at Milton. The Priester Funeral Chapel of Milton was in charge of arrangements.

A memorial has been established to the Sunnyside Cemetery Association.
