R.S. Laughrige dies; funeral is Thursday

Robert S. Laughrige, 82, 207 E. North, Bloomfield, died at 6:12 a.m. Tuesday at the Davis County Hospital.

He was born July 21, 1900 in Columbus, Neb. to Walker and Margaret Laughrige. He had been a resident of Bloomfield since 1947.

He was principal of Keokuk Senior High School for 21 years, the Bloomfield High School for 17 years and the Moulton-Udel High School for three years. He was currently secretary-treasurer of the Bloomfield Area Chamber of Commerce.

He was a member of the Bloomfield United Methodist Church; a 50-year member of the Franklin Loddge, A.F. & A.M.; a member of the Bloomfield Rotary Club; a member of the Consistory and Za-Ga-Zig Shrine Temple in Des Moines; a past DeMolay Dad in Keokuk; and a member of the National Retired Teachers Association. He married Lillis Day in 1926 in Brighton. She died in 1953. He married Mabel Dills Gilfillan on June 17, 1961 in Bloomfield.

Survivors include his wife; one son, Robert J. of Ottumwa; one daughter, Joy Miller of Ottumwa; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Bloomfield United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Ellis Andrews. The casket will be closed at noon Thursday at the Wagler Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Brighton Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday with Masonic services following immediately at the Wagler Funeral Home.

A memorial has been established to the Bloomfield United Methodist Church building fund.
