Harry Leon Laird

Harry Laird, 57, well-known Scotland County jeweler, died Monday morning, July 25, 1977, at Davis County Hospital, in Bloomfield, Iowa, from a lengthy illness.

He was born June 20, 1920, in Adair County and was the son of Ross and Flossie Hodges Laird. On September 30, 1945, he married Betty Jean Daniels at Gibbs, Missouri.

Surviving are his wife, a son, Stephen Charles of Burlington, Iowa, and a daughter, Lisbeth Jean of the home, and two grandchildren. Also surviving are one brother, Max Laird of Hurdland, two sisters, Mrs. Walter (Katherine) Mihalevich of Kirksville, and Mrs. Glen (Olive) Stephenson of LaPlata. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Fred.

During World War II, Mr. Laird saw 39 months of active service in the South Pacific.

In 1946, he opened a jewelry and watch repair store in Memphis. In 1947 he purchased the former W.B. McLand building in Memphis, where he operated the business until 1972. For four years he was a salesman for Jules Borel & Co. of Kansas City, Missouri. Mr. Laird was a member of the V.F.W. Post 4958.

Funeral services were conducted by D.W. Payne & Sons from their Memphis Chapel, Wednesday, July 27, 1977, at 2:00 p.m. with the Rev. Kenneth Campbell officiating. Pallbearers were Ted Gundy, Gerald Gray, Clark Mustoe, Bill hall, Dale Barker, Jack Dannenhauer. Honorary Pallbearers were Russell Cravens, George Townsend, Wayne Buckley, Bill Davis, Jess Rockhold, and Arland Eager. Organist was Mrs. Ann Luther. Interment was in the Memphis Cemetery.
