Cantril Businessman Dies Last Friday

Selman H. Daughrity, son of Edmond H. and Josie M. Casady Daughtrity, was born Oct. 16, 1903 at Keosauqua, Iowa and died at his home in Cantril, Friday, Feb. 20, 1970 at the age of 66 years.

When he was small, his parents died, and he was raised in the home of Mr. and Mrs. O.M. Casady. He graduated from the Cantril High School and farmed in the Cantril community nearly all his life. From 1942-49 he was Head Sheep Buyer for John Morrell & Co. The past 20 years he was an implement dealer in Cantril.

His community activities were many and varied. He had been mayor, a member of the town council and served on the school board. At the time of his death, he was a director of the Van Buren Telephone Co., a trustee of the United Methodist Church, a member of the Van Buren County School Board, the Masonic Lodge, the Order of Eastern Star, and a charter member of the Lions Club.

On June 11, 1927, he married Madalene Smith. To this union two daughters, Jane and Kay, were born.

Survivors include his wife Madalene, the two daughters, (Jane) Mrs. Dean Martin of Cantril and (Kay) Mrs. Kenneth Jennings of Browning, Mo.; five grandchildren; one sister, Kathryn Nedeau of Keokuk; and two brothers, Lawrence of Davenport and Harry of Fort Madison, other relatives and many friends.

His presence will be missed but memory of him cherished by his family, who he loved; his community which he served; and by countless ones who knew him as 'friend.'

Services were held at the Cantril United Methodist Church on Feb. 23, 1970 at 2 p.m. with Rev. Herbert E. Phillips officiating. Wellborn Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Interment was in Maple Grove Cemetery.
