JAY PAUL ARMSTRONG

Mayor Jay Paul Armstrong, 53, of Farmington, died Monday February 22, at 2:55 a.m. in St. Joseph hospital, Keokuk.

Armstrong has been a patient there since January 21 when he was seriously burned in a gas explosion in the old Congregational church. The accident happened when Armstrong flipped an electric light switch in the church basement. The spark touched off accumulated fumes from a bottle gas furnace. There was no fire damage to the building owned by the Pioneer Historical Society.

Armstrong had been improving until February 15 when he underwent surgery for bleeding ulcers.

He was born February 12, 1918 at Ottumwa, the son of William H. and Ivah Strain Armstrong. He spent his childhood in Ottumwa.

He married Opal Hunter on June 18, 1930 at Lancaster, Mo. She survives.

He was a resident of Farmington 24 years and was owner-operator of Mercury Cleaners. He was mayor for nine years; was the current president of the Illiamo Travel Council, a member of the United Methodist church, the Lions Club and the Pioneer Historical Society.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his mother, Mrs. Ivah Armstrong of Farmington; one son, John Armstrong of Farmington; one daughter, Mrs. Adella Burton of Clinton; one brother, John A. Armstrong of Pasadena, Tex.; one sister, Lennice Buchanan of Roswell, New Mexico; two grandchildren and two step-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father and one brother.

The funeral service was held Wednesday, February24, at 2 p.m., in the United Methodist church with the Rev. Edward Maus and the Rev. Ronald Cochran officiating. Burial was in Greenglade cemetery.
