Ethan A. French, 88, of Mt. Sterling, Ia., formerly of Whittier, Calif., died Sunday, Sept. 13, at 9 p.m. at home in Mt. Sterling. Death was sudden.
The funeral service was held Wednesday, Sept. 16 at 10:30 a.m. in the Mt. Sterling United Methodist church with the Rev. Herbert Phillips of Milton officiating. Burial was in the Farmington cemetery. Miller-Hofbauer Funeral Home in Farmington was in charge of arrangements.
He was born Jan. 9, 1882 at Farmington, the son of John C. and Mary Warren French.
He was a retired carpenter and spent most of his life in California.
He married Rilla Lyons of Keokuk. She preceded him in death.
Surviving are one son, Dale French of Whittier, Calif.; two sisters, Rosa Hornbaker of Keosauqua, and Hazel Madden of Mt. Sterling, with whom he made his home; one grandchild and one great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, one son and three sisters.
