Charles Vernon Gardner

Charles Vernon Gardner, son of Charles and Stella Dulin Gardner, was born May 16, 1913 in Davis County near Selma, and departed this life Wednesday, July 1, 1970 near his farm home east of Selma. His entire life was spent in the Selma community.

On April 24, 1936, he was married to Arlene Henkle. She remains to mourn his passing, along with their two son, Richard of West Point and Thomas of Selma, their daughter, Mrs. Martha Plowman of Douds, daughters-in-law Nancy and Barbara Gardner and son-in-law Jerry Plowman, and five grandchildren. Also surviving are a brother, Kenneth of Troy, two sisters, Mrs. Vera Golden of Selma and Mrs. Ida Belle Klicker of Bloomfield, his mother-in-law, Mrs. Edith Henkle of Selma, other relatives and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Darrell and Robert, a sister, Mrs. Louise Chaplin, and twin sisters in infancy.

Vernon was active in the Farm Bureau, and was currently serving on its board of directors. He had served on the Van Buren County Extension Council and as a Trustee of the Selma United Methodist Church.

He will be remembered as a faithful husband and father, a good neighbor and a true friend, who did his part toward making his community a better place in which to live.

Funeral services were held Saturday, July 4, 1970 at the Selma United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Willis Grant officiating. Vocalists were Mrs. Ralph Lepper and Mrs. Robert Pedrick, accompanied by Mrs. Garold Hughes. Pall bearers were Lee Ritz, Garold Hughes, T.O. Nutt, Kermit Plowman, Marvin Roush and Joe Michael. Interment was in the Mount Moriah Cemetery. Arrangements were in charge of Pedrick Funeral Home, Douds.
