Mrs. James Lancaster

Mrs. James Lancaster, 53, of Mt. Sterling, died at 9 a.m. Saturday, June 27 in Laughlin Hospital at Kirksville, Mo., where she had surgery Friday. She had been ill from a heart condition for several years.

She was Ellen Carolyn Bennett, daughter of Walter and Allena Madden Bennett. She was born Nov. 13, 1916 at Mt. Sterling and spent her entire life there. On May 16, 1931, she married James William Lancaster. For the past 26 years she and her husband had operated the Sterling Café.

Survivors are her husband; one son, Joe Lancaster of Viola, Ill.; two daughters, Mrs. Joy Roberts of Concord, Ill. and Mrs. Barbara Craig of Keosauqua; her mother, Mrs. Allena Bennett of Mt. Sterling; three grandchildren; six sisters and one brother.

She was preceded in death by her father and one grandson, Gregory Allan Roberts. Surviving grandchildren are Jamie Lancaster, Pamela and Carolyn Roberts.

The funeral service was held Monday afternoon in the Mt. Sterling United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Herbert Phillips officiating. Burial was in Harness Cemetery. Catcott Funeral Home in Keosauqua was in charge of arrangements.
