Selma Soldier Killed

A rural Selma couple were notified Tuesday night, June 23 of the death of their 20-year-old son who was killed while serving with the United States Army in Cambodia.

Defense Department officials reported Sgt. Robert F. Steele was killed in hostile action on June 19.

Steele entered the service on July 7, 1969 and left for Vietnam on Dec. 28 of last year. He took basic training at Ft. Polk, La.

He was born Feb. 10, 1950 in San Jose, Costa Rica, to James F. and Faye White Steele. His father retired from the Air Force in 1964. Both survive.

Steele graduated from Cardinal High School in 1968 and had been employed by Felco in Fairfield before entering the service. He was a member of the Bible Baptist Church in Ottumwa.

Other survivors include a brother, James E. and a sister, Deborah Faye, both at home.

The funeral service was held Saturday, June 27 at 2 p.m. at the Campbell Funeral Home in Eldon with the Rev. Evert Day officiating. Military rites were held at Mt. Moriah Cemetery near Douds.

Pallbearers and firing squad came from the 5th Army District at Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas.
