Glenn Smithburg, 18, Dies From Injuries

Glenn Lee Smithburg, 18, of Milton, died Monday, April 27, at 11:10 p.m. in University Hospitals, Iowa City of head injuries received in a motorcycle accident Sunday afternoon, April 26. He had been transferred from Memorial Hospital in Keosauqua at 12:30 p.m. Monday.

The youth suffered serious head injuries at 4:30 p.m. Sunday when he lost control of the motorcycle he was riding. He was not wearing a helmet.

The accident happened on a gravel road three miles east of Cantril on a straight portion of the road. A companion, Don Davis of Milton, who was also riding a motorcycle, said apparently the youth lost control on loose gravel. The two young men were on their way to the Des Moines River for a wiener roast.

The motorcycle involved was damaged only slightly.

The son of Virgil and Roberta Campbell Smithburg, he was born Sept. 14, 1951 at Keosauqua.

He was a freshman at Centerville Junior College.

Surviving are his parents; two brothers, Glen Robert (Bob) Smithburg in the Border Patrol at Imperial Calif., and Wayne Smithburg, at home; one sister, Barbara Smithburg, at home. Also surviving are his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. J.R. Zoucha.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents.

The funeral service will be held Thursday, April 30, at 2 p.m. in the Milton United Methodist church with the Rev. Herbert Phillips officiating. Burial will be in Sunnyside cemetery at Milton.

The Wellborn Funeral Home at Milton was in charge of arrangements.
