Guy L. Pettit

Guy L. Pettit, 84, nationally known auctioneer of registered livestock, died at Davis County Hospital at Bloomfield at 5:35 p.m. Tuesday, April 14 following a lengthy illness.

He was the son of Giles and Lois Jones Pettit, born on a farm near Mount Sterling on Oct. 24, 1885. He was a farmer, school teacher and merchant in Mount Sterling until 1917 when he became an auctioneer and moved to Bloomfield. He was an instructor in the Reppert School in Auctioneering at Decatur, Ind. for 30 years. He was associated with the former Barker Manufacturing Co. in Ottumwa. A member of the Bloomfield Christian Church, the Masonic Lodge and National Auctioneer Association, he was a member of the school board of the Bloomfield Independent District.

He married Mamie Young on March 16, 1910. She died Jan. 16, 1942. On Feb. 27, 1943, he married Fern Stark, who survives. Also surviving are one son, Judge Charles N. Pettit of Bloomfield; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. A son, Lowell died on July 5, 1964.

The service was held Friday, April 17 at 2 p.m. at Priester Funeral Chapel conducted by the Rev. Robert Allen. Burial was in I.O.O.F. Cemetery.
