Orlen Downard

Funeral services for Orlen Downard, 56, were held at the Keosauqua Congregational Church Monday, Oct. 20 with the Rev. Millard Marshall, assisted by the Rev. Howard McPeak, officiating. Burial with military rites conducted by Beer-Barker American Legion Post, was held in Purdom Cemetery.

Mr. Downard, a painting contractor and operator of the Downard Paint Store in Keosauqua, died unexpectedly Oct. 17 while bowling at the Van Buren Bowl in Keosauqua.

The son of John and Justine Bohun Downard, he was born Feb. 14, 1913 near Keosauqua. he spent his entire life in this area except during World War II when he served with the U.S. Army. he married Ava Jean Williamson July 14, 1942 in Missouri. They are the parents of a daughter, Mrs. Robert (Connie) Wells of Ottumwa. There is one grandson, Stephen Wells, 2.

He is survived by his widow; daughter, son-in-law and grandson; five brothers, Kenneth and Verne of Keosauqua, Roy of Sylvania, Ohio, Dale of Knoxville and Robert of Peoria, Ill.; four sisters, Mrs. Frances Danneil of Glenview, Ill., Mrs. Ruth Vickerman and Mrs. Marguerite Archibald of Keosauqua and Mrs. Roberta Lerche of Dalla, Texas; many nieces and nephews.

His parents and a brother preceded him in death.

Catcott Funeral home in Keosauqua had charge of services.

A memorial fund has been established payable to Keosauqua Congregational Church.
