Abraham Goemaat

Abraham Goemaat, son of Bastiaan and Dirkie Van Drogden Goemaat, was born Feb. 24, 1887, at Pella, and departed this life Friday, July 25, 1969, at the Van Buren County Memorial Hospital in Keosauqua at the age of 82. On Feb. 24, 1909, he was married to Cornelia Leyden at Pella. In 1917 they moved to the White community southwest of Birmingham where they have resided ever since.

Remaining to mourn his passing are his wife; a son, Boss of Birmingham; two daughters, Mrs. Carrie Manley of Fairfield and Mrs. Daisy Hootman of Fairfield and Mrs. Daisy Hottman of Ottumwa; six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Also surviving are four sisters, Mrs. Matt Leydens, Mrs. Henry Langstraat, Mrs. John Van Engelhoven and Mrs. Rene De Zwarte; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Three brothers and three sisters preceded him in death.

Mr. Goemaat was a farmer all his adult life, and was very devoted to good stewardship of the soil and other resources entrusted to him. He will be remembered as a good neighbor and friend, who did his part to make his community a better place in which to live.

Funeral service was held Monday, July 28, at 1:30 p.m. at the Zion Bible Church near Douds, with the pastor, the rev. Eugene Schmidt, officiating. Vocalists were Mr. and Mrs. Martin Oosthoek, accompanied by Mrs. Max Caves. Pall bearers were Dean Goematt, Donald Goemaat, Jerry Hootman, James Manley, Willis Deuser and Edward Leyden. Interment was in the Maple Hill Cemetery at Birmingham. Arrangements were in charge of Pedrick Funeral Home.
